Drury’s song is a riveting experience. The violin strings in the music base alone are worth the price of admission. At times you feel like you’re floating or wading down the water like you have no care in the world. The violin seduces you with its elegance and veiled sorrow. Just as you continue to contemplate and lose yourself into the mood, Drury’s opening vocals are stretched in their timing, with pauses in between. Drury, who started playing piano at age eight, uses his classical training skills to draw emphasis on the song’s flow. He builds a story within a story. As the violin strings fold into each other, the beat drops. The San Diego, California raised artist pounds the drum like a sledgehammer. The peculiar percussion peaks its way here and there, but the real star (besides Drury’s singing, of course) is the string arrangement. It’s just breathtakingly beautiful and compelling.
You made me hide, hung me out to dry, Drury sings. His voice is in the same realm as Lewis Capaldi (“Someone You Loved”) and stronger, more- full of character than Sean Mendes. The gripping vocals provide the listener with a range of emotion – despair, encouragement and agony. He creates this persona in “Second Chances” like that of an arrogant man, but yet, on the inside he’s just as insecure as you might think. You hear that range of feelings in his voice and as a listener, I had total empathy. I didn’t feel sorry for him, but I had this connection. It takes 10-seconds, he sings, pinpointing an idea of just saying sorry, or use of the word forgive. Drury’s open diary approach makes for a great pop song. I kept going back-and-forth on my theory of who is at fault. The rousing violin arrangement make it that ‘alt pop sound’ that Drury has nestled into. His fans should be used to his moody music beds and songs that cross genres by now. It’s a just a matter of time, maybe it will take 10-seconds, before the rest of the world discovers this James Dean-like pop singer. Brooding and sensitive, Drury isn’t your average artist. “Second Chances” plays out like a Rebel Without a Cause…only Drury’s melodrama is put to song.
