Singer/songwriter and rising superstar April Rose Gabrielli has recently signed an exclusive songwriting agreement with the massive music publishing company BMG. Performing since early childhood, April Rose Gabrielli has toured the US and Canada as well as internationally. What was the best day in your life thus far?
I think the best day of my life thus far was a day in August of 2018, when I got the first check for a music gig that would help me become a full-time musician. It was a major turning point for me. Since then, I have been able to devote myself fully to my own music, play on tour with other bands, collaborate with other artists and occasionally get to teach music to incredible children.
What are the challenges you face professionally on an everyday basis?
Professionally, I feel that I struggle the most with discipline and time management – but not in the way that you may think. I struggle with balancing, staying healthy and not overworking. I work on music (at least) Monday through Friday from 10am-6pm with breaks for lunch and dinner. Usually it winds up being a lot more than the time allotted, sometimes it runs into the weekends and I run myself into the ground thinking I can find an extra hour somewhere if I look hard enough… but there are only 24 hours in a day! When you are responsible for your own output, it is difficult to feel that your “break time” or “down time” isn’t time wasted, because there is always more to do.
If you could tour or play on stage with anyone on the planet who would you want to play with?
At the moment, I’d choose to play with my own band, because I miss playing shows and want to share these new songs desperately. I’d also love to play on stage with Queen, Styx, Patti Smith, Florence and the Machine, Miguel & The Roots. I’d love to tour alongside Regina Spektor, Sia or P!nk!
You are a brand new color in a crayon box. What color are you and why and remember you’ve just been created?
I’d be a new color that lives in the realm of orange, red, pink and yellow. Let’s call it…. “Oredinkow.” I am a synesthete, so color runs my whole life. I have always resonated with blues, purples and darker, cooler colors. I have always struggled with anxiety, depression and a lot of inner turmoil and these darker colors have always presented themselves in my psyche when I was at my worst. But as my life has changed in the past two years, I find myself seeking warmth, new beginnings, the freshness of citrus, the authenticity and femininity of red blood, the light pink hue of a blushed cheek, yellow sun and daffodils that my dog loves to eat on her walks. My perspective feels lighter, free and rosy. Ultimately, I have found it’s up to me to make things lighter. Your life is the way you wish to color it… if you are a crayon like me, that is.
What drives you?
What drives me is slightly indescribable, but I have an early memory I always return to. I was likely three or four years old and I had a “vision” of playing music, singing and dancing on stage with a group of kids my age. I remember thinking to myself “I want to do that, whatever that is.” Fully realizing that early memory is a sensation that drives me to continue moving through challenges, doubts and fears about “what if.” I always work hard to maintain a childlike sense of wonder and excitement. I believe it will not let me down.
How does it feel being signed to BMG a Major Company?
It’s truly validating to have been signed by Kate Hyman at BMG. I love the feedback, opportunities and interactions with all of the various team members and departments I have worked with so far. I feel that my authentic musical style is fully embraced, represented and protected. When my incredible manager, John Velasco approached me with the possibility of meeting Kate and working with the company, I couldn’t believe it. It still doesn’t feel real to have such strong and authentic support from such great people (as I have always been my entire team since I was 17 years old) but I am tirelessly working to represent myself and BMG in a big, fantastic way.
How would you best describe the music?
Big vocals, bigger feelings, pop melodies, a dash of rock and roll.
