Movies

A seemingly harmless tweet from Sesame Street muppet Elmo on Twitter (X) has caused a flurry of reactions. As such, people are wondering what the muppet said on Twitter. Here is all you need to know about the trend.

What did Elmo say on Twitter (X)?

Elmo put out a tweet on Twitter (X) that said “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”.

This innocent tweet ended up sparking a variety of reactions from people who stated that they were not holding up well. This tweet ended up receiving over 176.3 million impressions, 114K likes, and over 12K comments as of writing, leading to Elmo jumping high on the Twitter trends where he still stays.

The reactions comprised topics such as a general hatred for Mondays, personal life issues, the ongoing wars taking place, corporate layoffs, and also the election cycle going on in the United States.

Even celebrities shared their reactions, telling Elmo how they were feeling. T-Pain told Elmo that he was looking for someone to talk to and someone to show love to, and actress Rachel Zegler claimed that she was resisting the urge to tell Elmo she was sad. However, one celebrity, Chance the Rapper had a more positive reaction claiming that he was in a happy place at the moment.

Eventually, the overwhelmingly negative reactions reached an extremely dark point, resulting in the official Twitter account of Sesame Street tweeting thanks to Elmo for checking in with people and reminding them to pause and take a mindful moment to focus on their feelings. The Twitter account also put up a link directing people to the official Sesame Street site addressing mental health.

Then the very next day, Elmo responded to the trend with another tweet where the muppet expressed that he was glad he asked people how they were doing and that he would check in on people again soon. Then in response, one fan asked Elmo whether anyone asked him how he was doing.

Why is Elmo’s tweet offending people?

Elmo’s tweet may have offended some people due to it accidentally reminding them of the difficulties that they are going through.
