Ponyo is a magically fantastical Japanese animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This fantasy tale revolves around the life of Ponyo, a goldfish who comes to the seashore trapped in a glass jar and is set free by a five-year-old human boy, Sōsuke. Happy to be free, Ponyo affectionately licks the wound on Sōsuke’s arm and magically heals his wound while also getting a taste of human blood. This act transforms him into a human girl from a goldfish. The transformation, while sweet in the beginning, with Sōsuke as a friend to play with, soon tips the scale of ecological balance for the worst.
