Dylan Minnette has spoken about why he chose to quit acting and focus on music instead.
The Wallows musician shot to stardom after starring in 13 Reasons Why, but has since revealed that reaching such heights in his career prompted him to reevaluate things.
“I was fortunate to find success in [acting],” he said during a recent interview on the Zach Sang Show.
“I was on 13 Reasons Why and it was really popular and definitely reached a peak in what I’ve had in acting. But it also started to feel like a bit of a job. I was in a very fortunate position, it was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like just a job.”
The artist now plays in Wallows with bandmates Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, sharing that they hope to take things “all the way as far as we can.”
“I feel like I’m in a position now where I can just kind of like do that for a while and get this the farthest it can be,” he added. “The only way that’s gonna happen is if I put my 100% time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously.”
Minnette continued that he still thinks he has “something to give” in acting and is starting to feel “inspiration” in that arena again, but that the band takes priority. “At some point, when we’ve fulfilled our Wallows duties and we’re all ready to take a break as a band, that’s when I’ll have the perfect inspiration to do something,” he shared.
Wallows’ new album ‘Model’ came out last week, described by NME in a three-star review as “indie-pop that stays in the comfort zone”.
It continued: “‘Model’, then, feels too safe for a band that has been around for this long and is both simultaneously slated for some of their biggest shows yet, but still yet to really leave a footprint in the indie scene. Perhaps the songs from ‘Model’ they decide will flourish in those spaces, but one can’t help feeling like there were risks that should have been taken.”
