Joe Jonas is stepping out on his own for the next chapter in his discography. The 34-year-old singer has historically performed in groups like the Jonas Brothers, alongside his brothers Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas, and DNCE, alongside Jack Lawless, JinJoo Lee, and Cole Whittle.
But with his upcoming solo track “Work It Out” set to be released on July 19, the father of two is opening up about his upcoming solo album, which he shared will be out later this year.
During an appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, Joe talked about getting his brothers’ “blessings” to make music on his own.
“I asked my brothers’ blessings. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go work on, I don’t want to call it solo, but I’m gonna go do something on my own, and I don’t feel like it’s DNCE. And I need to go just express some stuff for myself,'” Joe shared. “And they’re like, ‘Go for it.’ Nick booked a movie. Kevin was going to do another season of Claim to Fame… and so I had the window of time.”
The Disney Channel alum said he made the album in just two weeks, calling it “The most personal music I’ve ever put out.”
He shared that his upcoming single, “Work It Out,” is about getting yourself out of a funk.
“The idea is sometimes you realize you have to just shake yourself out of something and you’re the only person that going to fix it for yourself. No one’s going to save you,” he said.
As for what fans can expect from the album, which is out “later this year,” Joe said, “This music, it’s all over the place. There’s some real beautiful ballads, there’s some songs about being a dad, there’s songs about love, there’s songs about being better to yourself, kind of everything.”
Joe last released a solo album, titled Fastlife, in 2011. In 2019, he reunited with the Jonas Brothers, and in 2023, the group released their sixth studio album, The Album.
It’s been a complicated year for Joe in his personal life. In September 2023, the singer and his ex Sophie Turner announced their plans to divorce after four years of marriage. The exes share daughters Willa, 4, and Delphine, 2.
In October 2023, the exes struck a temporary custody agreement not long after Sophie sued Joe claiming “wrongful retention” of their young daughters. In January 2024, she filed to dismiss the lawsuit.
However, their divorce, which Joe first filed in September, has not yet been finalized. In those court documents, obtained by ET, Joe said “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”
Sophie has since moved on with boyfriend Peregrine Pearson. Joe had a brief romance with Stormi Bree.
In a May cover story for British Vogue, the Game of Thrones star opened up about her painful split from the “Burning Up” singer.
Amid the divorce proceedings, Sophie noted that “there were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it.” She said she would even call her lawyer and tell her she didn’t think she could do it.
“After two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for,” Sophie said of her lawyer. “Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them.”
