In January of 2020, songwriters Eve Blackwater and Jeannie Skelly attended an open mic and heard back-to-back songs featuring women getting their necks broken. They vowed on the spot to start a band called “Brokeneck Girls,” and bring attention to the prevalence of violence against women in folk music. The arrival of the pandemic put a damper on those plans. Two years later, Eve found herself waiting tables in a dimly lit tavern alongside dark-hearted violinist Kendra MacDevitt and resurrected the project as a trio. The group dove into Murder Ballads- a category of traditional songs frequently based on real events, which were the original form of the True Crime Entertainment genre. Their quirky, pro-woman twist on centuries-old songs immediately resonated with the art community. The stories behind the songs took shape and grew into the play “Brokeneck Girls: The Murder Ballad Musical,” written by Miss Blackwater, which received the 2024 award for Best Musical at the NYC Fringe Festival.
