Mina Starsiak & Family Face Emotional New Beginnings in HGTV Return

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Good Bones: New Beginnings Episode 1, “Mina Take the Lake.”]

Good Bones is back and getting down to business when it comes to renovations as the limited spinoff, Good Bones: New Beginnings saw Mina Starsiak Hawk tackle a new project, a lake house for herself, her husband, and children to enjoy over the years. But their attempt to make over the house is disrupted by some big and emotional changes for the family.

While this may be the beginning of a new chapter, it also means the ending of another as Mina shuttered Two Chicks and a Hammer’s headquarters, hoping to use money from the sale to help with the renovation process at her lakehouse. But the tough decision didn’t come easily as Mina was informed the check used to pay for the space was fraudulent, leaving her to scramble and find a replacement renter or buyer.

Ultimately, Mina does find a renter, but that turns her attention to District Co., Mina’s store which she worries is a failure. The decision to close is tough on her husband Steve who laments the loss of such an important space that holds so many memories. As they sort out details about their other properties, Mina’s pals and fellow Good Bones vets MJ Coyle and Austin Aynes lend a helping hand in the reno process.

While Good Bones may typically feature Mina and her mother, Karen E. Laine, it’s clear after this premiere episode that things will be kept separate from one another as they tackle different reno projects. Karen doesn’t appear in the premiere and Mina’s ongoing tension with her mother was not featured in the episode, despite her openness about their family fracture in recent years.

Instead, the episode highlighted the emotional journey that Mina, Steve, and her kids make as they close the chapter on District Co.’s original spot and ultimately plan to open a new one in Noblesville, Indiana. Leaving the old store is leaving behind memories, especially of Steve’s sister Stefanie, who died in 2020. Stef’s pictures were hanging on the wall in the original store, and led to an emotional moment for Mina and Steve as they packed up the old District Co.

The installment concluded with the family moving into their lake house and welcoming others over for a celebration. While big changes still loom, it’s clear Mina and her family are taking the changes in stride. What did you think of Good Bones‘ return?
