What to Expect in The Room Next Door?

“Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton) were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine,” the official synopsis reads. “Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.”

The Room Next Door also stars John Turturro, Alessandro Nivola, Juan Diego Botto, Raúl Arévalo, Victoria Luengo, Alex Høgh Andersen, Esther McGregor, Alvise Rigo, and Melina Matthews.

Almodóvar’s script is based on Sigrid Nunez’s 2020 novel What Are You Going Through. The Room Next Door is Almodóvar’s first feature-length film since 2021’s Parallel Mothers starring Penélope Cruz. Between Parallel Mothers and The Room Next Door, Almodóvar wrote and directed Strange Way of Life, a short film starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.

Producers include Agustín Almodóvar and Esther García. Sony Pictures Classics will distribute the film in North America, while Warner Bros. Pictures will handle key international markets.

The Room Next Door will have its world premiere at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival. It will then screen at the 2024 New York Film Festival.

Almodóvar’s drama will be released in the United States on December 20, 2024.
