The first trailer for Amazon Prime Video’s Cross is here, and it’s clear the title character is going to be dealing with a very twisted villain when this series premieres in November.

Cross is an adaptation of the James Patterson novels and centers on Alex Cross, played by Aldis Hodge, a detective with a Ph.D in psychology who is raising his two children as a single father following the devastating murder of his wife.

The logline for the new series is: “Alex Cross is a detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify — and ultimately capture — the murderers.”

In the preview, we see at least one (and maybe more) killer; in voice over, a man says, “I’m not a monster. I don’t kill for fun. You’re gonna be part of a masterpiece. And when I’m done the world will know the truth.” We also get a glimpse of someone putting on a quite menacing mask and learn that some victims appear to have their appearances altered — including shaving their heads — before being staged as deaths by suicide or overdose.

It’s unknown at this time who the primary antagonist of Cross‘ first season will be or whether it will directly relate to a well-known literary counterpart from the novels. The villains featured in other adaptations of Alex Cross stories included Casanova aka Nick Ruskin in Kiss the Girls, The Spider aka Gary Soneji in Along Came a Spider, and Picasso aka Michael Sullivan in Alex Cross (a variant of the novel’s The Butcher of Sligo). The title character was previously portrayed by Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry.

Elsewhere in the trailer, it’s clear that the case(s) will continue to be too close to home for Cross, as he finds a photo of his family with his wife’s face crossed out and learns that a malign actor was even in his home.

Alongside Hodge, Cross also features Isaiah Mustafa as Detective John Sampson, Juanita Jennings as Regina Cross, Sharon Taylor as Lt. Oracene Massey, Alona Tal as Kayla Craig, Samantha Walkes as Elle Monteiro, Caleb Elijah as Damon Cross, Melody Hurd as Janelle Cross, Jennifer Wigmore as Chief Anderson, Eloise Mumford as Shannon Witmore, and Ryan Eggold as Ed Ramsey.

Cross, which premieres in full on November 14, has already been renewed for a second season by the streamer. The second season will feature the addition of actors Jeanine Mason, Wes Chatham, and Matthew Lillard.
