Tony Slattery passes away at 65, claims report

Tony Slattery, best known for his role in Whose Line Is It Anyway?, died on Tuesday, January 14, following a heart attack.

On Sunday evening, Slattery experienced a sudden cardiac event and was rushed to the hospital. After two days of critical care, he passed away. His long-term partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, shared the devastating news in a heartfelt statement, saying, “It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today, Tuesday morning, following a heart attack on Sunday evening” (via BBC).

Iconic comedian Stephen Fry paid tribute to Slattery on Instagram, writing, “So very sad to have lost the wonderful Tony Slattery, just about the gentlest, sweetest soul I ever knew. A cruel irony that fate should snatch him from us just as he had really begun to emerge from his lifelong battle with so many dark demons.” Fry noted that Slattery had recently started live shows and a podcast, relishing the warmth and affection of fans after years of battling mental health issues.

Josie Lawrence, Slattery’s co-star on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, also posted a tribute on social media, recalling fond memories of working with him. “Memories of just laughing a lot. Being silly and laughing. He was talented kind funny and beautiful. Sending love and condolences to wonderful Mark. Rest in peace now Tony,” Lawrence shared.

Slattery’s career wasn’t without challenges. In the mid-90s, he faced a severe mental breakdown, which he openly discussed in a 2019 interview with The Guardian. At the time, he was battling addiction. Despite these struggles, Slattery continued to inspire many through his talent and resilience. He even received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Comedy Performance for his work in the play Neville’s Island, wherein he played the role of Gordon.
