Christian GOP Rep. shows she knows absolutely nothing about Pride Month

Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) has called Pride Month evil, ungodly, and claimed that the left has “hijacked” it, which honestly makes no sense whatsoever since marginalized queers and transgender people originally started Pride celebrations as protests against police brutality and instutionalized queerphobia. In short, Pride Month has always been more left- and progressive-leaning than right- or conservative-leaning.

While speaking to the far-right Christian nationalist group, The Wallbuilders, Miller said, “I believe God has left us on Earth as believers to overcome evil with good and Pride Month, in my opinion, is evil. The left hijacked it to promote gender confusion, to promote indecency, hyper-sexualizing our children and actually grooming our children. So, I decided I’m going to reclaim it for the family.”

They also threatened to end funding for a state university for allowing a trans woman to join a sorority.

Miller was referring to her recently introduced resolution to declare June as “Family Month.” Her resolution is (unsurprisingly) supported by anti-LGBTQ+ organizations like the Family Research Council, Moms for America, and The American Family Project.

“The American family is under relentless attack from a radical leftist agenda that seeks to erase truth, redefine marriage, and confuse our children,” Miller told the right-wing outlet The Daily Wire earlier this month. “By recognizing June as Family Month, we reject the lie of ‘Pride’ and instead honor God’s timeless and perfect design. If we truly want to restore our nation, we must stand united to protect and uphold the foundation upon which it was built — the family.”

Miller is an unabashed Christian Nationalist who says she came to Congress “with a foundation holding to biblical principles, constitutional principles, and then the Republican Party platform.”

Miller has previously filed legislation to make it a felony to send any explicit adult images to any person for any reason, an anti-transgender bathroom bill she says will fight “radical gender ideology” being pushed “on our children,” and a so-called “women’s rights” bill that would try to redefine “women” in a way that excludes trans women.

In 2022, Miller was one of 157 Republicans who voted against a bill requiring the federal and state governments to recognize same-sex marriages.

Miller has also referred to Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), the only trans congresswoman, as “a gentleman,” called the overturning of abortion rights nationwide a “victory for white life,” and has repeatedly said that climate change is clearly fake because God controls the sun.
