WNBA superstar Brittney Griner is expecting her first child with her wife, attorney Cherelle Griner. The couple posted a sweet announcement on Instagram in which followers can see an ultrasound as well as the couple holding hands – their matching cross tattoos on full display.

“Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” the caption read, implying the baby is due in July. The post then confirmed it with the hashtag #July2024. Brittney Griner also has twin girls with her ex-wife, Glory Johnson

Congratulations messages have poured in for the happy couple, with celebrities like Kehlani and Joy Reid commenting as well.

Brittney Griner spent almost a year in Russian custody in 2022, when she was arrested for marijuana possession at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. She pled guilty but said in court that she accidentally packed the two vape cartridges before her flight. Her legal team also offered written statements saying her cannabis was prescribed to treat her chronic pain.

A Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison, but the Biden administration negotiated her release as part of a prisoner swap.

Cherelle Griner called her wife’s detainment “one of the darkest moments of my life.” Upon her release, she said she was “overwhelmed with emotions, but the most important emotion that I have right now is just sincere gratitude for President Biden and his entire administration.”

Griner will begin her 11th season in the WNBA this year and is a nine-time WNBA All-Star.
