Most LGBTQ Nation readers were able to vote just fine, but some did face barriers
LGBTQ

Earlier this week, we at LGBTQ Nation asked our readers if they anticipated facing or had faced any barriers to voting. Most didn’t, and even more ended up voting either way.

87% of readers chose the option that said that “voting was a breeze” and didn’t face any barriers. Another 6% said that they did face some kind of barrier but that they were able to cast a ballot anyway.

Only 3% said that they faced a barrier that prevented them from casting a ballot, and the remaining 4% didn’t or couldn’t vote for another reason.

This image shows a chart titled “Do you anticipate facing or did you already face any barriers to voting?” It presents responses from 4,038 people surveyed between November 1 and November 8, 2024, on LGBTQ Nation. The breakdown of responses is as follows: 87% said, “No, voting was a breeze.” 6% experienced barriers but still cast their ballots. 3% faced barriers and ultimately couldn’t vote. 4% did not vote for reasons unrelated to barriers. This snapshot offers insight into the experiences of LGBTQ+ voters regarding access and ease of voting in the recent election. The high percentage reporting ease suggests effective access for most, though the smaller percentages highlight ongoing challenges that some voters still face.

LGBTQ+ people face unique barriers to voting, and, as community media, many of our readers likely had their IDs challenged by poorly trained poll workers, IDs that may not have matched their gender presentation.

Voter restrictions like purges of voter rolls and restrictive voter ID laws can also prevent people from casting ballots that they are legally entitled to cast.

Check back on Monday for next week’s poll.
