A new movie from an Oscar-nominated director starring Keanu Reeves and Kirsten Dunst might be delayed to 2027.
What is the latest update for the black comedy starring Keanu Reeves & Kirsten Dunst?
The Entertainment System Is Down, a black comedy from Ruben Östlund, might be moving to 2027. The rumored plan was a 2026 Cannes Film Festival premiere followed by release later that year. Now, Östlund might hold the film for one more year and bring it to Cannes 2027.
“At the end of February, we’re going to decide whether to go to Cannes this year, or actually wait and edit one more year before we release the film,” Östlund told Deadline from the Göteborg Film Festival.
According to Östlund, editing this unique film has been extremely time-consuming.
“Today, you can map out all your images in a VR set, so you know exactly where the camera is going to stand,” Östlund added. “So when you get to the actual set, the camera is constantly rolling. And now, when I’m editing, I basically have to edit down 60 minutes of material to a one-minute scene. So it’s a huge amount of material and will take a long time, and I have to pay the material respect.”
In Östlund’s new black comedy, a group of passengers must “contend with boredom” when the entertainment system breaks.
Reeves and Dunst headline a star-studded cast that also features Daniel Brühl, Samantha Morton, Nicholas Braun, Julie Delpy, Tobias Menzies, Vincent Lindon, Connor Swindells, Daniel Webber, Wayne Blair, Daniel Wyllie, Lindsay Duncan, Allan Corduner, Sofia Tjelta Sydness, Erin Ainsworth, Myles Kamwendo, Sanna Sundqvist, Elle Piper, Tea Stjärne, and Benjamin Ingrosso.
Östlund writes and directs the feature, and Erik Hemmendorff and Philippe Bober will produce. A24 will distribute the movie in the United States.
Whether in 2026 or 2027, Östlund plans to bring The Entertainment System Is Down to Cannes for a chance at history. Östlund will attempt to win his third consecutive Palme d’Or. Östlund won the award for 2022’s Triangle of Sadness and 2017’s The Square.
