Vandals defaced a family business’ pro-LGBTQ+ display. It responded in a powerful & surprising way.

An unknown vandal spray-painted graffiti and smashed a window displaying pro-LGBTQ+ signs at Corner Drug, a family-owned pharmacy in Woodland, California early Monday morning.

The signs expressed support for Woodland Pride and LGBTQ+ residents, with one sign stating, “Hate has no business here” and another rainbow-colored sign declaring the business as a safe space from hate crimes, according to the Vanguard News Group. The crudely painted graffiti read, “[S]upport fa**ots get boned.”

“At first, it hurts… to be targeted. But I’ll tell you, the community has been amazing,” the business’ co-owner Erik Daniells told the local ABC news outlet. “We were there on Sunday boarding up the windows and we had longtime customers, and friends, and family… so many people came to check on us.”

The business released video footage of the suspected vandal running from the scene of the crime. The business has also put up a wooden board with a brightly rainbow-colored mural in place of the damaged window.

Elyse Doyle-Martinez, the local artist who painted it, said, “This is something I always want to do when something like this happens, is create art in the moment as a response.”

“To the person that did this: we can fix a window but you will always be broken,” Corner Drug wrote in a Facebook post. “I can also see you started to have some trouble with spelling, always practice on a sheet of paper first.”

The business also announced that it would financial support local LGBTQ+ organizations, including Elevate Queer Yolo: Lgbtqia+ Youth & Young Adult Services and the Davis Phoenix Coalition, writing to the unknown vandal that the donations came “as a direct result of this hate,” adding, “You did this.”

“An attack on us is an attack on our community and this will make us stronger together,” the business wrote.
