The late Harry Potter star Alan Rickman was known for his warmth and kindness on set. Now, his fellow cast member Gary Oldman has opened up about the thoughtful gestures he made behind the scenes.
Oldman recently reflected on the legacy of his Harry Potter co-star Alan Rickman. The actor, who played Sirius Black in the film series, shared that Rickman helped make the magic accessible to all children.
“Alan was kind of like the cheerleader of it. He was into it, he was doing it, so he was with it and committed to it,” Oldman shared with the audience at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday.
Recalling the emotional BTS moments of Harry Potter, Oldman went on to reveal that Alan Rickman would “bring in kids every single day” to watch the actors film their scenes or explore the extensive sets.
Why Alan Rickman made time for children visiting the Harry Potter set
Oldman revealed Alan Rickman’s acts of kindness on the set of Harry Potter. “He would bring them in from a school, he’d bring them in from the hospital, he’d bring friends and their kids in every single day for lunchtimes and things,” the Slow Horses star recalled. “He’d take kids around to tour the sets, and we’d meet them.”
Oldman further shared that he “thought that was the most extraordinary thing, that he was in this world that he got to be in, come in every day, and that he knew how much it meant to these kids. So, he wanted to share it.” (via Entertainment Weekly)
Alan Rickman passed away in 2016 at the age of 69, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He played Severus Snape in all eight films of the Harry Potter series. Other notable credits include Die Hard, Love Actually, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and many more. An accomplished thespian, Rickman was also a recipient several coveted accolades, including a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award.
