In addition, each screening will also include a special introduction by acclaimed film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, as he spotlights the heartfelt performances and gripping drama that has made Steel Magnolias a cherished favorite for more than three decades. Tickets for the special screenings are available at Fathom Events, or at participating theater box offices.

What is Steel Magnolias?

“The film is a hilarious and heartwarming story of life, love, and loss set in a small Louisiana parish. At the center of the group is Shelby, newly married and joyfully pregnant, even though her diabetes could make childbirth life-threatening. Terrified at the possibility of losing her only daughter, M’Lynn looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fear of death to join Shelby in celebrating the miracle of new life,” reads the synopsis.

Steel Magnolias was directed by Herbert Ross from a screenplay written by Robert Harling, based on his 1987 stage play of the same name. Besides Roberts, the film also starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Tom Skerrit, Sam Shepard, Dylan McDermott and more. For her performance as a young woman suffering from diabetes, Roberts won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
