A new sci-fi crime comedy featuring Eiza González has sparked sequel talk after its streaming debut. However, the director of Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is keeping expectations grounded, even as fans push for more from this unusual, genre-blending story.
BenDavid Grabinski reveals whether Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice 2 can happen
Writer-director BenDavid Grabinski shared during an interview with Slash Film that he didn’t build the film with a sequel in mind. Speaking about a possible follow-up, he explained that the story was designed to stand on its own. “It has to be self-contained,” he said, adding that thinking about a sequel too early could weaken the original ending.
Still, he didn’t completely shut the door. Grabinski admitted he could revisit the world if a strong idea comes later. “I could wake up six months from now and have an epiphany, but I just sort of felt like, if creatively, I was thinking about a follow-up, it would undercut what happens. I understand how someone could misunderstand the ending as maybe being a cliffhanger, but I think it’s not,” he said. Grabinski emphasized that right now, he is not actively planning a sequel. His focus was on making one film that feels complete and satisfying.
The movie has elements of time travel, crime drama, and romantic comedy into one story. Vince Vaughn plays dual versions of a gangster named Nick, while Eiza González plays Alice, caught between dangerous loyalties. James Marsden plays Mike, a softer figure whose actions drive the plot. The story revolves around preventing Mike’s death, creating a strange but emotional loop.
The film premiered at SXSW 2026 before landing on Hulu, where it reached a wider audience. Critics responded fairly well. It holds a 78% critics score and 65% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while scoring 6.3/10 on IMDb. Many praised its originality and performances, though some found its tone unpredictable.
For now, the ending remains final by design. Grabinski believes viewers already get enough closure, especially in the emotional exchange that took place during the final scene of the movie. Whether that changes depends entirely on one thing: a future idea strong enough to justify another chapter. At the same time, the film quietly leaves a crack open. A potential sequel could pick up from there, but for now, it doesn’t seem to be happening.
