Katie Cassidy reflects on her time as Black Canary in the Arrowverse

During a recent conversation with ComingSoon, Katie Cassidy looked back on her years portraying Black Canary. She also discussed various versions of Laurel Lance across the Arrowverse.

Reflecting on the role, Cassidy noted that the opportunity to play several distinct versions of the character as a major highlight of the experience. She said, “I started as Laurel Lance, then she hit rock bottom and evolved into Black Canary. Then the character was killed off, and later I came back as her doppelgänger from Earth-2 on The Flash. So there were multiple versions of Laurel, and I think that ultimately benefited me as an actor.”

Cassidy noted that the changing nature of the character provided new creative opportunities. She explained, “If I had been playing exactly the same version of the character year after year, it might not have been as much fun. The different Earths and alternate versions allowed me to explore different sides of her.”

She also spoke about her overall experience with the Arrowverse, describing it as one of the highlights of her career. “I had an absolute blast with that role and that series. I’m proud of all of it,” Cassidy said.

Addressing Laurel’s death in the series, Cassidy admitted that the storyline was difficult to process initially. “Of course, I was upset, but I understood it from a storytelling perspective. Killing off a major character sends everyone else’s story in new directions and creates opportunities for growth,” she said.

Cassidy concluded by expressing satisfaction with how the storyline ultimately unfolded. She added, “Thankfully, they eventually brought me back, and I think everyone ended up happy with how it all turned out.”
