Vicar Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair) learned unexpected details about his birth story in the Grantchester Season 11 premiere that could cause a crisis of faith for the man of the cloth. The revelation came from an important scene with his biological mother, Mira (Nimmi Harasgama), when she came to visit. Warning: Grantchester Season 11 spoilers ahead!

Grantchester Season 11, the final season, premiered on Sunday, June 14, on PBS. It staged a murder mystery at a drive-in movie theater that started with a fake obituary for a man who wound up dead just hours later. Alphy and D.I. Geordie Keating (Robson Green) worked to solve the crime. They discussed Alphy’s new relationship with his biological mother in their downtime.

Alphy met Mira at the end of Season 10, but viewers didn’t see her until Episode 11. Alphy told Geordie that their time together has been nice and they get along well, but that he has a concerning recurring dream about death ever since she came back into his life. Geordie was convinced that Alphy needed to ask his mom the hard-hitting questions about his family history in order to make the dream go away.

Alphy was left at a Christian orphanage when he was born, and his upbringing led him to his belief system and his life in the church. Mira came to one of his services to see him at work and meet his found family in Grantchester. They all dined together afterwards in what was a frequently awkward conversation, but Alphy and Mira got along well in moments of privacy. However, these moments also showed the cultural differences between the mother and son.

Unable to hold back his burning questions any longer, Alphy finally asked Mira why she gave him up for adoption and who his father was. She said that she hasn’t seen his father since Alphy was born, and that she gave birth to him completely alone and in secret, not even in a hospital. Alphy thought there was some deeper meaning to her decision to leave him at a foundling house after his birth, but Mira said it was the first viable place she could find in the immediate aftermath of the traumatizing birth experience.

Alphy has built his life around his faith, and he thought that there was some kind of destiny to his mother leaving him where she did. But the lack of intention behind her decision shook Alphy, leaving him questioning the very foundations of his identity.

The episode ended with him processing in the information, leaving us questioning how this sad but necessary conversation will impact Alphy and Mira’s relationship moving forward, as well as Alphy’s feelings about his Grantchester community.
