Why ‘Deadliest Catch’ Isn’t New This Week & When it Will Return
TV

What To Know

  • Deadliest Catch is taking a break for the July 4th holiday and will return with new episodes on July 10.
  • This season has featured intense challenges, including severe weather, mechanical breakdowns, and personal struggles among the captains and crews.
  • Upcoming episodes will follow winter crab fishing.

The captains of Deadliest Catch have certainly faced their share of challenges during Season 22 thus far. Devastating weather conditions and boat mechanical breakdowns have once again not made crab fishing any easier. With quota deadlines tight, failure is never an option. The fury of the Bering Sea often proves no match for the sheer grit of these seafaring crews.

Up next, the Discovery Channel series will chronicle the winter months, which will be anything but smooth sailing. However, fans will have to wait a little bit before new episodes resume. With the July 4th weekend, the show is skipping a week, which means there is no new episode on Friday, July 3.

Rest assured after the fireworks and barbeque celebrations, Deadliest Catch is set to head back out into the open waters for more harrowing adventures on July 10.

According to the synopsis, the ninth episode picks up during the winter season. Sophia “Bob” Nielsen appears to be sitting under the learning tree of Sig Hansen on the Northwestern at the Russian line. Jake Anderson prepares Cornelia Marie for a risky trip north. Elsewhere, the Wizard is the only one in the vicinity to reach a crab boat that sank near St. George.

Jake Anderson

Discovery Channel

Looking back on what we’ve seen so far, Jake Anderson has felt pressure of honoring Phil Harris, the former captain of the Cornelia Marie who died in 2010.This came after having to work through problems tied to his past vessel the Titan Explorer. On top of that, Jake had personal struggles including finding the new normal coming off divorcing his wife Jenna after 13 years of marriage.

His mentor Sig Hansen showed you can teach an old dog new tricks by working with an underwater drone (ROV) alongside “Wild” Bill Wichrowski on an expedition through freezing waters. Over time the Northwestern captain teamed up with Jake earlier on their respective crab catching expeditions.

When one of his crew Karl Rasmussen injures his toe, Sig reaches out to Rick Shelford to receive azithromycin to help him. He’d return the favor to the Aleutian Lady captain by guiding him out of an area that would otherwise damage his pots. Rick’s deckhand Todd Meadows, who died after falling overboard in February, was remembered during the season premiere. A sobering reminder of how dangerous this line of work can be.

Keith Colburn knows that from not only a physical, but mental perspective. He recognized he needed to step away from the Wizard after feeling exhausted. His brother Monte “Mouse” Colburn took over operations, which meant also cleaning up a mess in terms of 50 pots that were placed in a restricted area. Monte was able to navigate the issue, but looks to have a heart-to-heart with Keith about the future. Things have also been eventful for Johnathan Hillstrand, who started off teaming with Keith against Sig. The captains make up in the end. From there, Johnathan’s Time Bandit overcame Mother Nature to set pots and an exhaust leak to secure the remaining 300,000 pounds of golden king crab.
