Michael Byrne, the English actor best known for his roles in Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Braveheart, and more, is dead at 82.
On Tuesday, June 30, The Guardian was the first to report Bynre’s death. The actor died on June 20, although a cause of death was not revealed. He is survived by his ex-wife, actress Carole Nimmons; their two daughters, Tara and Bryon; and three grandchildren, Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.
Byrne memorably played the villain Colonel Ernst Vogel in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) opposite Harrison Ford‘s titular character. He also portrayed Albus Dumbledore’s rival, the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), as well as the villain Smythe in Braveheart (1995).
Other notable film roles included The Eagle Has Landed (1976), A Bridge Too Far (1977), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Apt Pupil (1998), Gangs of New York (2002), and more.
Additionally, Byrne was known for TV roles like Coronation Street, Casualty, The Archers, Cuffs, and A Touch of Frost, among others. He also accumulated a fair amount of theater credits, including Death and the Maiden, Much Ado About Nothing, Butley, The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull, Romeo and Juliet, All My Sons, and more.
