At a “summit” on the subject yesterday, organized by the State Department and hosted by Secretary Marco Rubio, Bessent was a featured speaker along with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller discussing the far-right’s fever dream of an ascendent leftist, Antifa-organized conspiracy to bring down governments around the world.

Miller called the movement the inevitable result of “deformed” leftists coveting “all that is beautiful.”
“That’s how you end up with the horrors we’ve seen throughout history, where good families are dragged out into the street and executed,” Miller said.

In Rubio’s remarks, the secretary tried to draw a parallel between groups like the Red Brigades in Italy in the 1970s and a “growing and deeply alarming increase in attempted assassinations against public figures” in the United States today, “most notably, of course, the multiple assassination attempts against President Trump and the successful assassination attempt against Charlie Kirk.”
“This is a fatal cancer to civilization,” he claimed.
Secretary Bessent was there to talk about the ways the Treasury Department is trying to stop all the money supposedly funding these organized networks from moving around the world. But he wanted to make one thing very clear before he started.
“Good morning,” Bessent told the assembled “excellencies,” rubbing his hands together in anticipation.
“And before I proceed, I’m going to go off script for a minute, which is always dangerous. But I’m going to remind everyone in this room, and all the media, that I was the subject of an assassination attempt February of 2024, by an addled left-wing activist two hours after being sworn into my job. So any of you who want to report that this is a fiction and does not exist, be there for the sentencing this August.”
He might as well have raised his hand and shouted, “Me, too!”
There was a slight quaver in Bessent’s voice, as though he was a little nervous adding his name to a list including Trump and Kirk. That could account for getting the date wrong — the incident was in January 2025, not February 2024, well before he was a known public figure.
And describing it as an “attempt” was generous.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, just after 3:00 p.m. on January 27, 2025, Ryan Michael English, 24, approached a U.S. Capitol Police Officer near the South Door of the Capitol Building and stated, “I’d like to turn myself in.”
English admitted to possessing a knife and two “Molotov Cocktails,” and confessed to being at the Capitol to kill a presidential nominee whose confirmation vote was scheduled that day before the U.S. Senate. That was Bessent.
The young man didn’t make good on his plan.
In March this year, English pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful receipt, possession, and/or transfer of a firearm and one count of carrying a firearm, dangerous weapon, explosive, or incendiary device on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. He’ll be sentenced on August 14.
The “Molotov Cocktails” English was carrying? Two 50-milliliter glass containers of vodka, better known as airline bottles. Even the TSA is okay with carrying them on planes.
They’re as small as the threat to Bessent’s life.
