Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is being raked over the coals after what many have characterized as a blatantly tone deaf statement about corrupt government leaders.

While bashing communists – and Russian leader Vladimir Putin – during a Tuesday appearance on Fox News, Cruz seemed to have no idea he was putting his own president on blast when he said, “Fidel Castro was a billionaire. Putin is a billionaire. The leaders of communist regimes are always rich. They steal and rob from those they govern.”

Social media users brutally mocked Cruz, considering Donald Trump has been using the presidency to massively enrich himself. In January, a New York Times report found his wealth had grown by over $1.4 billion during the first year of his second term.

After the report was released, Times investigative reporter Russ Buettner told Anderson Cooper that the number “is really greater than the sum total of everything he made from his inheritance, from being on The Apprentice, and from all the licensing deals while he was on The Apprentice.”

The estimate by the Times editorial board included earnings from cryptocurrency investments, licensing of Trump’s name, Amazon’s documentary on the first lady, and overseas real estate ventures.
