Speculation is running rampant about Grey’s Anatomy as the cast returns to production on Season 23. While some fans are hearing wedding bells over the outfits worn by certain castmates in behind-the-scenes images from the set, others have noticed something promising on the show’s social media feeds.
On Wednesday (August 12), ABC shared a throwback photo of Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang with the caption, “heavy on the Yang.”
Fans immediately hit the comments section with reactions of excitement. “What does this mean. what does this MEAN,” one fan wrote. “DON’T PLAY,” wrote another. Others speculated that ABC’s posting of this particular image might mean the long-anticipated return of Cristina to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital somehow — perhaps even to attend Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) wedding with Nick (Scott Speedman).
Sandra Oh, one of the series’ originals, left Grey’s Anatomy in Season 10 and later revealed that it was a mutual decision between her and bosses Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers because she felt the character’s journey was complete. In a July podcast appearance, she remembered, “I think end of Season 8 or 9, [Rhimes] took me aside because we were all renegotiating, and she goes, ‘What do you want to do?’ And I said, ‘Let me think about it.‘ And I really, really, really thought about it… I felt very much like I did my job. I really did my job. I feel like I created a whole character. I feel I grew the character, 10 years time, where it’s a believable growth. People do grow in 10 years, and I think she really did grow.”
Though fans have not seen Cristina since she flitted off to Switzerland and took over Preston Burke’s (Isaiah Washington) top hospital job, the character is very much still around in spirit through text messages and errant update mentions by the other OGs, usually Meredith.
Grey’s Anatomy has a tradition of bringing back long-gone characters for brief return arcs — Season 22, for example, saw the returns of Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce, Jessie Williams as Jackson Avery, and Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery. However, at the tippy top of most fans’ wishlist is Oh as Cristina, who’s not yet been back.
For her part, Oh has hinted at a willingness to come back for a show cameo after hearing all of the fans’ desires. In 2025, the actress told Entertainment Weekly, “For the longest time, it has always been a hard no… When you finish something, it’s a deep process…. I can’t stress to you enough how consciously I tried to fully process leaving. I don’t feel the need to revisit, but I also profoundly understand the audience’s love for this character, because I’ve seen it for the past 10 years. That’s the part that makes me just go, ‘Hmmm.’”
