Michael Tomasky, editor-in-chief of the progressive political publication The New Republic, warned about the president’s “noticeable… mental deterioration” in an August 4 article that notes, “In two more months, he may literally be drooling.”
Tomasky’s article predicts a midterm election “blue wave” comprised of three groups: eager anti-Trump voters “who have always thought he was a fascist goon and an imbecile,” naive swing voters who believed Trump’s now-broken promises to lower prices, and “Betrayed MAGA Pigeons” who will sit out the midterms after being disillusioned by his failed pledges to deport millions and not engage in foreign wars.

“[Trump] sits up there and says we’ve won the [Iran] war, we control the Strait of Hormuz. Inflation’s no big deal. Affordability isn’t a thing. Data centers are great, and if you’re against them, you want to stay ‘backwards and poor.’ The United States is the ‘hottest’ country on earth. As the American people cry out for help, he’s obsessed with building monuments to himself,” Tomasky wrote.
“By November 3, there’s every chance that Trump will be more unpopular than he is today,” he added. “His mental deterioration in just these last few weeks is noticeable, and in two more months, he may literally be drooling.

“A wave is building,” Tomasky concluded. “And the man toward whom the wave is heading looks out on the ocean and sees calm, pacific seas. He’s delusional, spent, incapable of responding to reality. In the next two months, all that is only going to get worse—and more apparent to the American people.”
Last July, Trump’s clinical psychologist niece said his “cognitive, psychological, and physical decline” has resulted in him facing daily “humiliation.” She also noted that Alzheimer’s disease runs in her family.
In October, Dr. John Gartner told The Daily Beast that the nearly 80-year-old president is exhibiting a “massive increase” in “clinical signs of dementia,” exacerbating the president’s “malignant narcissism.”
Gartner noted the president’s “disordered” thinking and compared his rambling and nonsensical public speeches to dementia patients who “pick up on one concrete physical detail” and then “free-associate” away from the original topic. He also noted Trump’s fabrication of nonexistent events and his forgetting of politicians’ and countries’ names.
“People don’t make those kinds of [recurring speech errors] if they’re tired or if they’re aging,” Gartner said. “It’s something very specific that is linked to dementia and organic, cognitive decline…. This is really someone who could wake up and — in a state of complete confusion and erratic irritation — do something catastrophic.”
