With the cast really coming together for filmmaker Joseph Kosinski’s take on cult 1980s cop drama ‘Miami Vice’ –– titled, in its new big screen incarnation ‘Miami Vice ’85’ –– the director has engaged the services of an actor whose work on ‘The Odyssey’ has put him in the awards conversation.
John Leguizamo (‘Encanto’) is the latest addition to the cast, and per The Hollywood Reporter’s story on him joining the movie, it appears he’ll be the main villain.
And (for the trivia fans) this won’t mark his first time in the ‘Vice’ world, as he also appeared in three episodes of the original series, playing two different characters.
Leguizamo joins the likes ofthe likes of Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone and Whitney Peak, who were added recently. The cameras should be cranking soon, with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler starring.

What’s the story of ‘Miami Vice’?

‘Miami Vice’ began life in the early 1980s as a TV show created by ‘Hill Street Blues’ writer Anthony Yerkovich, after NBC president Brandon Tartikoff requested a program that combined the style of MTV with a cop series. The result, produced by Michael Mann, starred Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs, two detectives working undercover in Miami. The show, which ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1990, became known for its groundbreaking visual style, its hip needle drops, and the fashions worn by its characters, arguably revolutionizing the look of TV crime drama for decades to come.
After Mann moved into directing feature films, he rebooted ‘Miami Vice’ as a 2006 movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs. While not initially a hit with either critics or audiences, the film has since been reappraised and is now considered a cult classic.
The new film, written by Dan Gilroy (‘Nightcrawler’) explores the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami in a story inspired by the pilot episode of the original show.
When will ‘Miami Vice ’85’ be on our screens?
The movie is currently set for release on May 19, 2028.
