What To Know

  • Shane Gillis accidentally dropped an F-bomb during a “Green Eggs & Ham” skit while hosting Saturday Night Live on October 10.
  • Gillis immediately broke character, acknowledged the mistake, and later apologized to the audience during the show’s closing bows.
  • Because SNL airs late at night, it is unclear whether the show will face FCC fines for the on-air profanity, and the swear word was censored in online versions.

Shane Gillis apologized after dropping an F-bomb during a “Green Eggs & Ham’ skit on Saturday Night Live.

On the Saturday, October 10 episode of SNL, the stand-up comedian hosted NBC’s sketch comedy series. Gillis unfortunately made a major (and likely expensive) flub during a Dr. Seuss skit.

The sketch featured Gillis as a man named Zachary, Mikey Day as his dad, and Andrew Dismukes as Sam-I-Am. After Sam-I-Am repeatedly pestered the father about eating a platter of green eggs and ham, Zachary stepped in to put an end to it.

“Hey! What the hell’s wrong with you?” he said. “My dad said he doesn’t like green eggs and ham. Drop it. Walk away.”

“But he may like green eggs and ham,” Sam-I-Am insisted.

To that, Zachary replied, “Bro, it’s a non-starter. He said he doesn’t f***ing — geez — like them,” as he registered the swear word too late and broke character. He waved at the audience as they laughed and cheered, and Dismukes gave him a pat on the back.

Gillis continued, “He said I do not like green eggs and ham,” and the skit proceeded.

Day again brought up the moment while arguing with Zachary. “I want you out of this house!” he demanded. “You’re a loser, and you said a bad word!”

“Yes, I did,” Gillis said.

Later, Gillis apologized for the curse word while on stage during bows.

“And, uh, sorry about earlier,” he said. “Thank you, guys, very much. Have a good night.”

FCC fines for “obscene, indecent and profane content” are typically for programs airing from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Because SNL airs well outside that window, it seems unlikely that the show will face a fine for Gillis’ snafu.

In the version of “Green Eggs & Ham” published on SNL‘s YouTube Channel and elsewhere, audio was cut during the accidental F-bomb.

Saturday Night Live, Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC
