The ACOTAR drought is over! It’s been over five years since A Court of Silver Flames was released, and at long last, Sarah J. Maas is back with a sixth book, A Court of Splintered Harmony. It’s part of a new story arc called The Valkyrie Cycle, which is separated into movements. Luckily for us, three of those “movements” have been written already, so the seventh book is imminent.
If you plan on devouring ACOTAR Book 6 right away, you won’t have to wait too long for A Court of Forgotten Melody — The Valkyrie Cycle: Movements II and III. We know it’s a lot to keep track of, so we’ve put all the latest ACOTAR Book 7 — we’ll just call it A Court of Forgotten Melody for simplicity’s sake — updates in one place. Get the release date, plot details, and more. Plus, how many books will be in The Valkyrie Cycle? Find out below.
What is A Court of Forgotten Melody‘s release date?
After having an ACOTAR Halloween, we’re going to have an ACOTAR New Year. A Court of Forgotten Melody comes out on January 12, 2027. No years-long wait here! (Though, who’s to say when the next next book comes out?)
What is A Court of Forgotten Melody about?
A Court of Forgotten Melody promises “what was lost will be reclaimed.” The official description reads: “Prythian might never be the same again. Traditional alliances are crumbling, and no amount of diplomacy seems sufficient to repair them. With the continued threat of Koschei the Deathless on the horizon, a united front is crucial — and farther out of reach than it has ever been before.
It continued, “Bonds will be tested. Power will shift. And old enemies will emerge from nightmares of the past. As the Night Court’s Inner Circle disperses far and wide, desperate for any advantage against Koschei and his mighty allies, peace hangs by a fragile thread. But hope can be spun from the darkest of shadows, and the Night Court has its own part to play in the looming crescendo.”
How long is A Court of Forgotten Melody?
If you thought A Court of Silver Flames was long, just you wait. A Court of Forgotten Melody is 896 pages, according to Bloomsbury.
How many ACOTAR books will there be in total?
As of right now, we only know that there will be an eighth ACOTAR book; whether it’ll be the last in the series isn’t known, but it will wrap up The Valkyrie Cycle arc. It doesn’t have a confirmed release date.
Maas spoke about her decision to approach the next several ACOTAR books in an untraditional format. “What if this book was really f***ing long? Like, what if it took me more than a thousand pages to tell the story that needed to be told, the arc that I wanted to create from start to finish? What if that took a long time? What if that took beyond the constraints of a single volume?” she said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March 2026.
The author realized it was going to be a “huge” single story told in four parts. “So then I wrote Part 2 and Part 3. And those were really f***ing long. And then Part 4 has yet to be written because right now I’m trying to just get Part 1, which is out in October. And then Parts 2 and 3, which will be out in January, is one combined thing. So basically, it would be like three physical volumes, but it’s like one thing altogether.”
She wants The Valkyrie Cycle to be read like one massive story, not a trilogy. “Arcs aren’t wrapped up,” Maas added.
In March 2023, it was announced that Maas signed a new four-book deal with Bloomsbury Publishing. This deal didn’t include her latest novel, House of Flame and Shadow from the Crescent City series, which was released in 2024.
We know two books in the four-book deal are the sixth ACOTAR book and the fourth Crescent City book. Maas hinted that another book she’ll be writing will be a new story not set in the worlds of ACOTAR or Crescent City.
“There’s one book that I’m going to be writing after this next ACOTAR book that I’m very excited about. I’m not going to say what world it’s in. I’m not going to say anything,” she told TODAY. “But it’s a story that’s been brewing in the back of my mind for a long time… I think it’s going to be a very emotional book for me to write just in terms of the world I’ll be writing and the characters that might pop up.”
The New York Times bestselling author has also teased that she might continue connecting the worlds of her three series — ACOTAR, Throne of Glass, and Crescent City. “The gates between worlds could open again, possibly to other places,” she told TODAY. “I’m not committing to anything. But I love the idea of being able to play in all three worlds.”
