Sophia Bush says she won’t say Donald Trump’s name: “I don’t think you deserve to be a star”

Queer actress and activist Sophia Bush says she does not speak or write the president’s name.

While promoting her book, And I Will Tell You Mine, whihc covers some of her activist work, Bush told The Hill that “someone who chooses to exemplify and bolster the very worst of human tendency doesn’t really deserve to have their name spoken.”

“It’s the same reason that I think it’s incredibly important to speak the names of school children that are lost in school shootings, and not the name of the school shooter,” she said.

She added, “When you are wreaking terror on a community, I don’t think you deserve to be a star.”

“I’m not interested in talking about him; I’m interested in talking about us,” she said, adding that the misogyny he has perpetuated over the last ten years has “made things so much worse for women.”

But not using his name doesn’t mean she won’t keep calling him out, she emphasized.

She said becoming politically active and campaigning for Democrats was “not at all” a tough choice. “What would I do? Silence myself?” she said, adding that she didn’t care about being more palatable or hireable.

Bush came out as queer at the age of 41 in a 2024 essay for Glamour Magazine, after rumors of a relationship between her and soccer star Ashlyn Harris began swirling a year prior.

Bush’s essay details the immense pain she felt during her year-long marriage to entrepreneur Grant Hughes, as she knew something wasn’t right but felt completely trapped. She also expressed her profound love for Harris.

“I don’t know how else to say it other than: I didn’t see it until I saw it. And I think it’s very easy not to see something that’s been in front of your face for a long time when you’d never looked at it as an option and you had never been looked at as an option,” she wrote.

She called their first date — a four-and-a-half-hour meal — “one of the most surreal experiences” of her life.

A few weeks ago, she shared that she and Harris secretly got married in the summer of 2025. The small, private ceremony took place in upstate New York and included Harris’s two children, Sloane and Ocean, along with Bush’s best friend Nia, who officiated.

Bush added that she’s so happy to make the news public because it “feels so amazing” to get to call Harris her wife. The couple also said the true reason they talk about their love so publicly is because they understand the significance of visibility.
