Sam Riegel just gave fans a brutally honest update on The Legend of Vox Machina’s final season. The co-creator shared both promising and sobering details about the Season 5 timeline.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 5 release date will be a while
Sam Riegel recently shared with The Direct that fans should prepare to wait for The Legend of Vox Machina Season 5. The Prime Video animated series adapts Critical Role’s first Dungeons & Dragons campaign into five seasons. Season 4 premiered in June 2026, and the confirmed fifth season will conclude the story.
Riegel co-created the show and also voices the character Scanlan Shorthalt in the series. He acknowledged that the production timeline for animated television remains unpredictable and lengthy. The scripts were finished years ago, but additional work on the remaining episodes continues.
“We never know, it’s up to the whims of television. You know, producing a season of animated television takes a long time. We wrote these episodes two and a half years ago, or something like that. So Season 5 is in the works. We have finished some episodes of it, there’s still more work to be done on other episodes. Then when we finish, it has to be adapted into different languages, and subtitled, and dubbed, and shipped all over the world and stuff, so it just takes a lot of time.”
Still, Riegel assured viewers that the final season will deliver a satisfying conclusion to the saga.
“I hope we won’t have to wait super long, but I will tell you this: no matter how long the wait is, the payoff will be so worth it. Seasons 4 and 5 tell an incredible story, and I think we ended the series exactly how we wanted to.”
Seasons 1 through 3 arrived on an annual schedule between January 2022 and October 2024. However, Season 4 broke that pattern with a 20-month gap after Season 3. A similar wait would place Season 5 around February 2028.
Meanwhile, animation studio Titmouse now produces both this series and The Mighty Nein simultaneously. That expanded workload across Critical Role’s growing animated universe may stretch timelines even further.
