Comedy TV is on a bit of a winning streak when it comes to the sports genre, with more than a few hilarious titles to binge out there. As we gear up for the returns of favorites like Ted Lasso and Chad Powers, a question looms: What is the best sports comedy TV show right now?
With the recent release of Will Ferrell‘s Netflix series The Hawk, the impending return of Apple TV’s Stick, and Hulu’s Canadian import Shoresy, there’s a plethora of options out there for an array of sports. And athleticism isn’t a requirement to enjoy these various titles, which are often padded with heartwarming stories unfolding between the laughs.
Apple TV has two winners with Ted Lasso and Stick, covering football (a.k.a. soccer) and golf. While we’re eager to jump back into the world of A.F.C. Richmond as Ted (Jason Sudeikis) returns to England to coach the new women’s team, that wouldn’t be the case without its first three seasons making us fall in love with the characters at the heart of the comedy.

Meanwhile, Stick delves into the mentor-mentee relationship between washed-up golf pro Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson) and prodigy Santi (Peter Dager), and while it’s certainly comical, the series pulls at heartstrings with layers of personal grief and trauma that the characters must work through. And Netflix entered the golf comedy ring with Will Ferrell’s recently released series The Hawk, which follows his character Lonnie Hawkins’ attempt at a career comeback and also explores family dynamics.
On Hulu, Glen Powell plays Russ Holliday and the titular character of the football-angled comedy Chad Powers, which finds the disgraced Russ looking for a way back into football when he becomes inspired by Mrs. Doubtfire for an open try-out with the South Georgia Catfish. While the show delves into darker elements about identity and coping with past mistakes, the disguise element lends itself to some seriously hilarious moments for Powell.
Then there’s Hulu’s other comedy Shoresy, a spinoff of Letterkenny, where the titular character is a hockey player who takes his talents to the Sudbury Bulldogs. Portrayed by series creator Jared Keeso, Shoresy delivers his signature sense of humor that isn’t to be missed and not to be confused with the recent string of hockey romance shows like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus.
