After eight years of waiting, the story of Crazy Rich Asians is finally getting a sequel, but not on the big screen.
HBO has officially ordered an eight-episode drama series based on the 2018 romantic-comedy that will pick up where the film left off, bringing back several familiar faces for another round of romance, family drama, and extravagant wealth.
Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng will return as series regulars, reprising their roles as Rachel Chu, Nick Young, and Eddie Cheng, respectively. Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh will also return in a recurring role as Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor Young.
Based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, the sequel series will be led by Adele Lim, who cowrote the original film and will serve as showrunner and executive producer.
“It’s a Crazy Rich family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” said Lim in a statement. “Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers’ room is humming, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
