The cast of Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses‘s comedy Rooster is expanding as HBO reveals a star-studded lineup of guests including Lamorne Morris, Sutton Foster, and Shrinking‘s Michael Urie, among others.

A whole new group of performers will play a role in the Steve Carell-led comedy set at the fictional Ludlow College, where his character joined the faculty to support his daughter’s career following an unexpected hurdle in her marriage. As we gear up for the next chapter, we’re breaking down everything we know about Rooster‘s second season already, including what Lawrence and Tarses have shared with us regarding their plan for the series as well as who is joining the cast, when Season 2 could air, and much more.

Scroll down for a closer look, and stay tuned for additional news on Rooster‘s second season in the months ahead.

Has Rooster been renewed for Season 2?

Rooster was renewed at HBO partway through airing its first season. HBO renewed the comedy after it averaged 5.8 million viewers across the first four episodes in the United States, making it the most-watched freshman comedy on the cabler in over a decade.

When will Rooster Season 2 premiere?

Rooster Season 2 doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but Lawrence teased that the start of Season 2 filming began in August, hinting that fans are closer than ever to seeing the characters at the heart of this series back on their screens. While it’s too early to know when the show will be back, we wouldn’t say it’s a stretch to assume a 2027 premiere date is possible.

Who will star in Rooster Season 2?

Rooster Season 2’s full cast hasn’t been announced quite yet, but we’re expecting Season 1’s Carell, Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Lauren Tsai, Robby Hoffman, and even Connie Britton to reprise their roles. It has since been announced that O-T Fagbenle, Sutton Foster, Lamorne Morris, Zavior Phillips, and Michael Urie would also join the comedy.

How many seasons will Rooster have?

If it’s up to Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, Rooster would have a three-season run at HBO. “I think in our dream scenario, three probably would be enough to tell this story,” Tarses tells TV Insider. “Am I wrong about that?” he asks, turning to Lawrence.

“No,” Lawrence concurs, adding, “One of the cool things about streaming nowadays, and we never got to do [is] you pitch a beginning, middle, and end, and we know the beginning, middle, and end of this particular story, but it’s so much fun, I’d do it forever, and ever, you know?”

So, if it’s up to the showrunners, this series would continue on into a third and final season, but only time will tell if that vision comes together. They’re partway there, though!

What has been said about Rooster Season 2?

“We are so grateful to Warner Bros. Television and HBO for being such great partners and to Casey, Amy and Channing for giving us the opportunity to keep making this show with Steve and our amazing cast. It’s been a career highlight for both of us, but more for Matt than me,” Lawrence shared in a statement tied to the renewal announcement.

What would Rooster Season 2 be about?

Rooster‘s second season will likely continue to follow Carell’s character Greg Russo, his daughter Katie (Clive), and others at Ludlow College, but where exactly the story will take us remains to be seen as we await what’s next in Season 2.

Stay tuned for more Rooster and let us know what you’d like to see from the show’s return.
