The Love Hypothesis is the first Ali Hazelwood adaptation to rock the rom-com world, and it’s far from the last. The Love Hypothesis is Hazelwood’s first novel — and the first to turn into a movie. Once a Star Wars fanfiction about Rey and Kylo Ren, Hazelwood published The Love Hypothesis in 2021, and she became a must-buy author for quite a few romance readers (us included).
Her first book—and the Prime Video movie it’s based on—follows Stanford biology PhD student Olive, who accidentally kisses one of the department’s scariest professors, Adam Carlsen. Olive kisses him to convince her bestie that it’s OK for her to date Olive’s ex. Adam and Olive enter a fake dating arrangement when they realize it could be mutually beneficial: Adam needs funding from the Stanford faculty, and they need to believe that he’s not a flight risk. A steady, local girlfriend would help.
Hazelwood, Reinhart, and Catherine Hagedorn served as executive producers. Claire Scanlon (Set It Up) directed, and Sarah Rothschild (The Sleepover) wrote the script.

Love, Theoretically

The rights to Love, Theoretically haven’t just been acquired — the movie adaptation is officially in development at Prime Video, the same studio that made The Love Hypothesis. Deadline reported the development in June 2026, and there hasn’t been any news since.
Hazelwood’s third novel revolves around theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway. Her day job is adjunct teaching at a university, and she works as a fake girlfriend on the side. It’s exactly what it sounds like: She works for an app that sets her up with clients needing a date for some reason or another. For a personality chameleon like Elsie, it’s an easy gig.
Her favorite client’s older brother, Jack Smith, gets under her skin and grows suspicious of her. It gets worse when Jack is on the hiring committee for a tenure position Elsie is interviewing for at MIT. Jack is actually a famous experimental physicist who once made theoretical physicists like Elsie look like a joke. He also ruined her mentor’s career as a result. It becomes Elsie’s mission to convince Jack that she’s the right person for the job.
Speaking of the right people for the job, Along for the Ride director and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before writer Sofia Alvarez is directing, screenwriting, and executive producing. Hazelwood is an executive producer on this one, too. It Ends With Us author Colleen Hoover, who’s handled her fair share of romance adaptations, will produce with her Heartbones Entertainment partner Lauren Levine. Magic Hour Entertainment’s Max Siemers and Tanner Anderson will also produce.

Deep End

Streamer switch-up! Deep End is going to Netflix, with 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Levine and Unwell Productions’ Alex Cooper and Matt Kaplan producing. Unwell is making the upcoming Hulu drama You Deserve to Know, starring Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley, as well as Netflix’s sports romance Icebreaker, an adaptation of Hannah Grace’s book of the same name. Screenwriter Laura Kosann is attached. She’s also adapting the novel Butcher & Blackbird into a movie.
The film, which was revealed to be in development in August 2026, is a sports romance rather than a STEM one. Stanford junior Scarlett is a talented diver, and she starts hooking up with the school’s swimming star, Lukas. They’re both focused on qualifying for the Olympics, and as their fling heats up, Scarlett has to decide if it’s too much of a distraction.

Several Hazelwood books still haven’t been snapped up — at the moment. Not in Love, Love on the Brain, Problematic Summer Romance, Bride, Mate, and Check & Mate are among the books that haven’t been optioned just yet.
